Calontir to host Emprise at Gulf Wars!

Greetings unto the Know World Equestrian riders and their Mounts.

I am Sir Otas the Fool of Calontir. Rider of the daring, mighty, clever and sometimes demanding mule named Buttons.

I would like to issue a challenge to all equestrians attending Gulf Wars with mounts. Meet me and Buttons on the equestrian field of Gulf wars for the Calontir Emprise on Thursday.  Buttons and I will be riding to bring honor to our Kingdom of Calontir and we will be riding on the side of our Kingdoms allied side called Fire(Ansteorra).  My steady steed and I will burn brightly and hotly for the Gallery and will bring our best as we challenge the side of Water(Trimaris) to the many games.

I challenge all you riders to wear your best, ride your best and bring glory to and be a shining example of Chivalry from your Kingdom and your chosen side of the Emprise whether it be Water or Fire. And most importantly join your fellow rider friends from around the world in a Calontir style sponsored day of equine fun.

Come now I know you all don’t want it said a Fool and an Ass out challenged or out shined you at Gulf Wars?  Come put this simple mule riding fool in his place with your greatness and spirit of fun.   ; )

Please see the rules of the Emprise below and get your venency letters to Madoc ap Llewellyn as described below.

Signed

Sir Otas the Fool  (sometimes called Sato)

Fire shall be the symbol of the Kingdom of Ansteorra , and Water shall be the symbol of Trimaris. There will be three skills at which the combatants shall challenge one another, the double quintian, Spear and ax throw, and the reed chop. Each combatant will also be judged by the Ladies Gallery for their heraldry, chivalry, and prowess.

        Requirements for participation:
*Each combatant must submit a Letter of Venency to the Emprise Marshal of the Field, HL Madoc ap Llewellyn to proclaim their intent to participate in the Fire and Water Emprise. These letters must be in his hand ( or email) no later than March 4th, 2010.

*Each combatant shall be riding a horse, and must make their own provisions for their mount.

*Each combatant must be competent at the speed of a canter, as the challenges will be expected to be run at such a speed, with consideration to safety first.

*Each combatant shall adorn themselves with appropriate heraldic livery, as well as their mount and their attendants. Combatants must have a helm with a crest, which they may wear for the tourney if they choose. Modern riding helmets will be allowed if well disguised. Crests may be as tall or large as the wearer wishes, but may be no less than six (6) inches in height.

*Each combatant shall have an attendant present throughout the competition, which will be available to hold the combatants banner, weapons and steed, as well as help the combatant make ready for their challenges. The combatant may have as many attendants as they feel they need, and if they also chose, they may have their own personal herald speak for them.

The Challenges:
There will be three challenges by which the Champion will be found. For each challenge, three passes will be made and points will be awarded.

• The Double Quintain
This is a challenge of speed and accuracy. Each participant shall stand at equal distances from the quintain. Upon the cry of the marshal to Lay On, the participants will then charge towards the quintian, one on either side and divided by a divider, to hit the target that is on their side of the quintain. The first to hit the quintain shall be awarded the winning points. Each pass is worth 10 points to the winner, and an additional 16 points will be awarded to that combatant who has won at least twice out of the three passes.

• The Spear and ax throw
This challenge is one of accuracy. Each combatant shall be given two spears and two axes for which they will throw at targets. The spears will be thrown at a large, hay backed target, as these will be live weapons. The axes will be of heavy weapons fighting standards, and will be thrown to knock heads off the standards. Each participant will have three passes. Each spear that sticks into the target will receive 2 points, with an additional 2 points being awarded should both spears stick. For the axes, each head knocked down by the ax ( and not by the action of the ax hitting the standard) will be awarded 2 points, with an additional 2 points awarded for both heads being knocked down. The overall winner of this challenge will be awarded an additional 12 points.

• The Heads
A challenge of accuracy and control. There will be four standards set up with heads. Combatants will use swords to knock the heads off the standards. The position of the standards will be determined by the Marshal of the field. For each had knocked off, 2 points will be awarded, with an additional 4 points awarded for all being knocked off in a pass. The overall winner will be awarded an additional 12 points.

There will be five areas which will be awarded prizes at the finish of the competition.
The Champion will be determined by the overall points awarded at the end of the challenges.
Judged by the Ladies Gallery will be:
Best Heraldic display, which will include livery, banners, crest, attendants livery and mount’s barding.
Prowess, which will be judged by the ease and skill shown during the challenges.
Most Chivalric, which will be judge on how each combatant presents himself to others on the field, as well as to the Ladies of the Gallery.
Primo Ground crew will be determined by the combatants and will be judged by how efficient, knowledgeable, skillful the ground crew is.

We may also be graced with a Balsa jousting demo a finally to our Emprise before we close with awards!

Combatants, please submit your letters of venency to Madoc ap Llewellyn
